[WERKREIHE | THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE MODULAR COMPONENTS ]

The development and construction of the greywater system and the filter is divided into several levels. In the exhibition WERKREIHE each individual development stage of the system is displayed in the functional wall of the tiny house to make the creation of a new concept and product understandable. Starting from the underlying principle to the finished system with its components the workshows show the individual stages.

NATURAL CIRCLES is a exhibition that shows which kind of principle I use to clean the water. The nature has a old knowledge that can fill hundreds of books. I take a look to the nature and I’m inspired by: How the nature clean the water? What kind of material is used? How does the construction work? How long the nature needs to clean it?

Template layer model: In nature the water runs through several layers. The layers consists of different material – e.g. gravel, sand and plant humus. It needs time until the water is cleaned and collected in underground storage like ground water where it’s stored for hundred of years. Micro organism work and enrich the water with important and worthful minerals which all creature need for a healthy life. The gravity is the physical method and the natural power to move the water through the layers.

Filter Material: In the nature the water runs through several layer of different material. Every layer has a special function and systematic with which the water is cleaned. First the bigger parts of pollution are filtered and each further layer gradually filters finer parts.
If the function wall with the refillable filter is ready I test different material, analyze the result and describe the chrakteristics because the function of every material is special. I would like to find the best mix to clean my water.

If I work in the tiny house I open the doors of the function wall and every friday the exhibition takes place from 17 to 19.
When the function wall is closed you can see the exhibition through the window of the tiny house.

For the greywater system I’m developing modular filter which are refillable and flexible and can be installed in the function wall of a tiny house. The requirements for cleaning the water of an independent and complete household are different from those which has a connection to the city’s water supply.

For a ecologically and economically sustainable system I can’t use filter that are thrown completely in the garbage after use. A single filter must change in the average case after one month because it loses its cleaning function and mikroorganisms and bacteria grow. If I need three / four filter in a month I would produce a lot of plastic waste and our nature is full of it especially the ocean.

The main goal of my project is the development and construction of filter which can use several times and be cleaned. A good solution reduce the plastic waste, save the money and search for new standards.

Which material is suitable to construct a sustainable filter?
Which material has good characteristics to withstand the effects of the environment like sun and water?

I’m looking for materials that satisfy the requirements of a water system and is sustainable. It’s very important to know the characteristics and the behavior if dirty water runs through it and the sun shines often.

The catalogue of requirements:

water resistant
transparent
light in weight
good to work with
stable and hard
safe for food
easy to clean | smooth surface
insensitive to soap
insensitive to the sun
recyclable, recyclable or biodegradable

During the September I construct the system in the function wall. I use the natural behavior of the water to stay in a horizontal line and build the frame for the tanks and the filter with a little slope. The water in the tank and the filter is directed in a specific direction and can pass several layer to the tank.

The filter and the tanks will be constructed to fit in the function wall and be a exhibition object at the same time. So there is a big challenge to build a functional and designed objects.

For the water recycling system I build my own filters, which I can fill with filter material, clean and replace the material.
As the first prototype I built the filters made of aluminium and plexiglas so I could reduce the weight and the use of plastic.It was possible to cut the exact dimensions for the filters by Modulor, so I just had to cut out the holes for the rain barrel bolting. The screw connections are used for the fixed connection of several filters. Through the Plexiglas at the front side the cleaning processes can be observed from the outside.

The technical structure is just before completion and the modules are temporarily used to a test run. The frame for the tanks and the filters is ready and has a slight gradient so that the water can flow in a certain direction. It is built in such a way that the modules can be moved.
On the upper level is the grey water tank, in which the shower used water is pumped. Below are two filters. On the middle level are the tanks for the biological purification stage and below it are another filter. The bottom level contains the tank with recycled water that can be used again. The exact technical structure as well as the functional description is described in more detail under the [ HOW IT WORKS ] section.
There are still free space, which are well used after completion.
